    Excellent video. As the videographer observes in one of his replies to comments, the Go Pro camera's wide angle tends to make the trail appear steeper and scarier than it really is. If you're in reasonably decent shape, if you follow the red and yellow bullseyes painted on the rocks by the Park Service, if you hike after the snow melts and early enough in the day to avoid lightning storms, you should make it OK even if, like me, you're from the flatlands. I got a little jittery in a few places, but, as I watched other summertime hikers ahead of me proceeding up the trail, I was confident I could too.

      And the stock clearance on those vehicles is like 10" and camera is mounted on the lowest piece of plastic I could find, so depth is less that 1 foot for sure. I imagine depth varies, but it's always been fine during hiking/4-wheelin season.

    • @BrianSweeney1985
      @BrianSweeney1985 3 роки тому

      The camera exaggerates! It's steep but it's nowhere near vertical. Good hiking shoes can smear the whole way with almost no need for edging. It's certainly somewhat exposed but it's non-technical.

      Just realized my comment makes no sense - I was thinking I was replying to actual video footage of the climb and not this flyover. That's what I get for using my phone instead of getting onto the computer. Anyway, my sentiment still stands - it's steep but not technical.

    Very smart and practical design! Thank you for sharing

  • @BrianSweeney1985
    @BrianSweeney1985 4 роки тому

    I have uploaded a terrible diagram here: drive.google.com/open?id=1HMQWUt5B85LZ8ARE3LmzhEU0qVmpy3bs The main platform is a 3/4" sheet of plywood. Don't go thinner. If care about retaining the ability to recline the back seats while the shelf is in the trunk, recline the full and measure the distance X shown in the diagram. X will vary depending on your heigh requirements for the Lower Support. You may wish to maximize storage under the shelf; we decided to maximize headspace while sleeping. Once you have settled on a length for X and height for your Lower Support you can figure out the lengths for Y and Z. If your Lower Support is shorth enough, you may not even need the trifold design, which makes things easier. The whole point of the trifold is to ensure that there is plenty of clearance opening and closing the thing and not hitting the ceiling. With measurements X, Y and Z in hand, cut the sheet of plywood at those points, and join using two large piano hinges, labeled A in the diagram. The two supports are just more plywood. In the case of the Lower Support, the 3 pieces are joined using angle brackets (C). The Upper Support is meant to be stowable, so the 3 pieces, in that case, are joined using small piano hinges, labeled D in the diagram. I added some blocks (B) to secure the platform while driving and while climbing in and out. I just placed the whole thing upside down and used the Lower Support as a guide to place the blocks such that the platform doesn't shift in any direction. Finally, I bought a few yards of duck cloth and wrapped all of the surfaces and fastened with a staple gun. I was careful to be sure that all of the staples and seems were on the non-sleeping side so that no sleeping bags would be damaged. If you can find waterproof duck cloth, I would use that. I couldn't find any, so I use a few bottles of DWR to waterproof the whole thing. Hope that helps!

    Look like it can get cold temperature. what you do for heater over night?

    • @BrianSweeney1985
      @BrianSweeney1985 4 роки тому

      Lay a heavy wool blanket down over the platform, put a 20-degree two-man sleeping bag on top of that, and then put your personal 0-degree bag on top of that. If it gets truly cold, you get into the two-man bag inside of the 0-degree bag. I actually found the 0-degree bag to be more than enough with an overnight low of like 10. The two-man bag then serves as an extra cushion, but it's nice to know it's there in case you get cold. I also had a window cracked all night to keep frost under control. I thought it was pretty comfortable overall.

    Did you do any other trips with storm ?

    • @BrianSweeney1985
      @BrianSweeney1985 4 роки тому

      O good glad you found this one - I was just getting ready to link it in the other post. We take her hiking/biking/skiing as often as we can. Each time we play it by ear: she's off leash as long as she's good, back on the leash if she starts to get too distracted and stops paying attention to us. We got her started off-leash by bringing her to a very mellow backcountry area where we would have nothing to worry about aside from Storm: no objective hazards, incapable of avalanching, decent weather, etc... As you can see in the video we started off by erecting a short dog run between my wife and I using two climbing harnesses, some some, a ten foot lead and a carabiner to let the lead run freely along the length of the rope. This was kind of a mess, so we eventually ditched the whole roving dog run concept, but the overarching steps are the same. Person A descends a ways while person B waits from a safe spot (just like safe avy terrain practices) while restraining the doggy. Once person A gives the signal, person B releases the doggy and follows from a safe distance while person A congratulates the approaching doggy and offers a bunch of fresh grilled chicken upon arrival. Starting the dog off in an environment where we are vastly more proficient (at least downhill) was key to teaching her that she needs to pay attention to our whereabouts. She's still not perfect but she has learned to keep track of us while off leash and her recall is constantly improving. In serious avy terrain we would keep her on leash on the climb because were too slow on the climb to keep her interested in chasing us. On the descent (for skiing and mtb) we're sufficiently fast that she enjoys chasing us and doesnt get too distracted. Also be aware of your dogs capabilities. I can ski terrain much steeper and firmer than my dog is comfortable in. Be careful that you figure out what slopes your dog can handle. Also, consider checking into an avy beacon for your dog. Pieps/Black Diamond make a dog beacon which broadcasts on a separate frequency so you can prioritize your partners over the dog, but the dog is still locatable in the event of a slide.

    • @McMcPherson
      @McMcPherson 4 роки тому

      Brian Sweeney okay sweet! Haha yes I see you got a little tangled there but I loved the idea of it , safety first right ! And I will totally be looking into that dog beacon for more serious terrain. I’ll probably find a mellow mountain face to start , so excited to see how my girl does !

      My aim was never to dissuade anyone from anything, but at the same time I always respect someone who knows when to back down in the mountains! Either way, bear in mind that GoPro cameras have a very wide angle which often makes things look steeper. I also have gone out of my way to edit out all of the boring stuff (there was plenty, I assure you!). You might consider just starting down the path and turning around whenever you start to get uncomfortable. Alternatively, just go hang out at the lake and enjoy the Diamond. Cheers!
